Waist circumference – your guide to health

Check your waist circumference and find out whether you fall  in this group.

Central obesity (defined as waist circumference ≥90 cm in men and ≥80 cm in women for Asians ) plus two of the following four factors,

 triglycerides ≥150 mg/dl,

HDL cholesterol <40 mg/dl in men and <50 mg/dl in women,

fasting glucose ≥100 mg/dl or previously diagnosed with type 2,

BP > 130/85 mm of Hg.

If yes, then as per  International Diabetes Federation , you suffer with metabolic syndrome (Syndrome X, Insulin resistance syndrome) which is a  group of metabolic abnormalities ,  having increased  risk of Cardiovascular diseases  and  Diabetes Mellitus  by 3-5 fold than normal population.

Other associated conditions include Non Alcoholic fatty liver disease  – Fatty liver which commonly  affects   25-45% of  population along with  Hyperuricemia , PCOD.

Obesity is the driving force behind metabolic syndrome. Thus  weight  reduction is the main stay of the treatment . With weight reduction improvement in insulin sensitivity has  favorable  modifications  in many components  of metabolic  syndrome.

Recommendation for weight loss includes  the combination of caloric  restriction,   increase in physical activity with behavior  modification. 500 kcal restriction daily less than  normal  requirement equates to wt. reduction of 1 lb/wk. Diet enriched with fruits and vegetables , whole grains , lean poultry and  fish is advisable.

Diet  restricted in Carbohydrates   gives  rapid weight loss. However adherence to diet is more important than which diet is chosen.

Gradual increase in physical activity upto. 60-90 min  of daily activity can lead to modest weight  reduction. If not possible,  30 min of moderate intensity activity or routine activities like walking, gardening, housecleaning, also can  lead to moderate caloric expenditure .
